Cincinnati coach Scott Satterfield is expected to hire Virginia Tech quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Brad Glenn as the Bearcats’ offensive coordinator, program sources confirmed to The Athletic on Tuesday. BearcatJournal.com was first to report the news. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Glenn would replace Tom Manning, who recently departed Cincinnati after a brief stint as offensive coordinator and tight ends coach to be tight ends coach for the Indianapolis Colts under new head coach Shane Steichen.
  • Glenn has more than two decades of experience as an assistant and offensive coordinator at the college level, including previous stints at Appalachian State, Western Carolina and Georgia State.
  • Glenn spent the 2022 season at Virginia Tech under first-year coach Brent Pry. He previously worked alongside Satterfield at Appalachian State from 2005-08.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

Why the hire makes sense for Cincinnati

Glenn is plenty familiar with Satterfield and others in his coaching orbit. Other than working as a fellow position coach with Satterfield for four seasons at Appalachian State under Jerry Moore, Glenn served as associate head coach and offensive coordinator under Mark Speir at Western Carolina; Speir is currently Satterfield’s chief of staff at Cincinnati. Glenn also worked as offensive coordinator at Georgia State for Shawn Elliot, another former App State assistant and longtime friend of Satterfield.

Satterfield will continue to call offensive plays at Cincinnati, but he describes his play-calling process as a very collaborative one. His offensive scheme and game plan is a system Glenn knows and understands well, making him a natural fit as coordinator.

It’s not known yet whether Glenn will take over as tight ends coach or if the Bearcats will make any adjustments to the other offensive position coaches. — Williams

What the move means for VT

Glenn worked with quarterbacks in his one season at Virginia Tech, though he expanded his role as a sounding board for first-time Power 5 coordinator Tyler Bowen after the Hokies struggled for much of the year, moving from the field to the press box to streamline that communication.

He made $475,000 last year.

Pry is expected to have a replacement in place in the next few days, with the Hokies set to begin spring drills in mid-March.

Glenn’s departure is the first from the initial coaching staff Pry put together at Tech. The Hokies gave receivers coach Fontel Mines a $150,000 raise to $425,000 annually to stay after Penn State and another Big Ten school showed interest last month. — Bitter
