Carl Edwards Biography

The former racing driver was born on August 15, 1979, in Columbia, Missouri as Carl Michael Edwards II. It was here in Missouri that he was raised and for his education he attended Rock Bridge High School where he graduated in 1997. From there he moved to the University of Missouri to study engineering.

It didn’t take him too long in college before he realized that it wasn’t helping him, because what he wanted was to be a racing driver. In fact, he was fond of sports since childhood, which made him think that everyone knew a lot or at least about running.

His journey to becoming a racing driver began when he was just 4 years old when his father, Carl Edwards Sr., built him a Go Kart. It kept him on his wheels well into adulthood. Even when he was in high school, he continued to drive and work on his car, and on the weekends he raced with his father.

When he was 15, he decided to try racing at Godfrey III using a fake ID, as the event was only open to 16-year-old players before he could enter the pits. and be 18 years old.

Carl Edwards was able to get up to $34,000 from his mother, Nancy Sterling, to fund the United States Auto Club’s Silver Crown circuit in which he took part. In 2002, he was already competing in NASCAR when he entered the Craftsman Truck Series for the then struggling MB Motorsports.

He would continue with a great performance which was crowned in 2005 when he finished third in the Cup standings, winning four races. That year, he was awarded the NASCAR Busch Series Rookie of the Year. This took place after the race driver was named the 2003 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Rookie of the Year.

The coming years would be good for him as he became NASCAR Busch Series Champion in 2007 and won the Dream Prelude in the same year. He also won the NASCAR Sprint All-Star (2011), 2015 Coca-Cola 600 (2015), and Bojangles’ Southern 500 (2015) races.

After enjoying a fine career in the fast lane, Edwards ended the game when he retired in 2017 after claiming 28 Cup victories. Many people did not understand why he decided to retire at the age of 37, when he was still only in his youth, but according to him, he had to follow what his courage told him.

Net value

The Missouri-born former racer is said to have an estimated net worth of over $50 million. He derived his income from his earnings as a racing driver and his winnings. More so, he enjoyed endorsement deals even as Forbes listed him as one of NASCAR’s highest-paid drivers in 2016.

His family, wife and children

Carl’s wife is Katherine Downey. The two have been married since January 3, 2009, after three years. Katherine was born on March 15, 1979 and is a doctor by profession.

Before dating and marrying Katherine Downey, the NASCAR star once dated Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Amanda Beard. Their relationship started in 2005 and by the end of 2006 everyone had left her.

According to Amanda in her memoir, the relationship couldn’t survive because Carl only talked about himself and didn’t think about what she wanted. Shortly after, Amanda Beard, who married Sacha Brown, said she had cut all ties with Carl.

That said, the former professional stock racing driver enjoys what appears to be a very good relationship with his wife, Katherine Downey, with whom he has two children, Anne Edwards and Michael Edwards.

The Edwards family lives in Missouri.
