State Farm All-Star Saturday Night - NBA All-Star Weekend 2015

Stephen Curry is currently one of the most talked about players in professional basketball.  As the NBA’s current MVP, Curry’s game speaks for itself, and he had a three-point shot that just always seems to connect.  However, aside from his skills on the court, Stephen Curry has won the respect and admiration of millions of people – simply because he genuinely seems like a good dude.  Curry is all of the things that people love to see in a professional athlete – and any celebrity for that matter.  He’s talented, humble, hardworking, and smart.  As Curry and his team currently take on LeBron and The Cavs during the NBA finals, this season could be the most important of Curry’s career thus far.  Here are 10 things you didn’t know about Stephen Curry.

His dream was to play for Virginia Tech

It was always Stephen Curry’s dream to play basketball at Virginia Tech, the school which both of his parents attended.  However, the school showed no interest in him, and he only received three division I offers by the end of his high school career. Curry ended up attending Davidson college where he went on to have a very successful career.

He loves breaking records

By now, Stephen Curry is no stranger to breaking records.  During his college career, he set several records including the scoring the more three pointers in a single season, and an all-time scoring record for Davidson and the Southern Conference.  In the NBA, Curry has continued this tradition and has become one of the best long-range shooters in the league.  He currently holds the NBA record for the most three pointers made in a single season

He wasn’t a top prospect

Although he is having an unbelievable successful career in the NBA, no one would have ever predicted it.  Although Curry is definitely talented, his small size made many doubt that he would be able to make it to the league.  In high school, he wasn’t considered a top prospect and only received three D1 offers, which is simply unheard of for most who go on to be NBA all-stars.

His name isn’t actually Stephen

Known mostly by his nickname “Steph,” most people just assume that his full first name is Stephen.  However, like his father, Steph Curry’s actual first name is Wardell. Curry says that because he and his father share the same name, people have just always called him Steph, and the name stuck.  During an interview in college Curry stated, “Every one just calls me Steph. They just shortened my name. I’m a pretty humble, quiet guy, so I’m cool with that.”

He met his wife at church

If you’ve been single for a while, you’ve probably heard someone tell you that church is a great place to find a partner.  You probably roll your eyes every time you heard this, but apparently there’s some truth to it.  At just 15 years-old, Stephen Curry met his wife, Ayesha, at a church youth group. According to Curry, “It’s funny, our parents used to make jokes about how cute we were together, but we didn’t know.” However, the two didn’t begin a relationship until years later when they reconnected in Los Angeles.

His brother is also a professional player

Stephen Curry’s younger brother, Seth, is also a pretty talented basketball player who played for the Phoenix Suns for a short while this season.  Unfortunately, Seth has not found the same success as his big brother, and is currently playing on an NBA D-League team.  Ironically, Seth even had a stint on the Warriors’ D-League squad.

He’s a good golfer

Stephen Curry doesn’t just do his thing on the court, he’s also a beast on the green as well. Apparently, he’s so good that his father believes he could stand a chance at a pro career.  According to Curry’s father, “If Steph got a golf coach and practiced and put in the time like he does in basketball, he could play. He’s really good. He’s that good. He doesn’t miss a lot of shots, and when he does, he can recover. He thinks he can make any putt he stands over.”

His father was also an NBA superstar

Stephen Curry’s father, Dell Curry, was also a star in the NBA.  Dell, who had a 15 year career in the league, played for several team throughout his career, but found the most success with the Charlotte Hornets. He still holds the record as the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. Curry’s number, 30, is also the same number that his father wore.

He appeared in a commercial as a child

Before becoming a basketball star, Curry was actually somewhat of a child actor. As a child, Curry appeared in a Burger King commercial alongside his father.  He also appeared in an NBA commercial as well as an episode of Off the Hardwood where he stated that he’d like to have the chance to make it to the NBA.

He’s a great dad

Like his father, Stephen Curry makes it a point to include his daughter in all of his experiences.  Recently, Curry’s daughter, Riley, has been attending his press conferences with him, and gaining a lot of attention for her cute and hilarious behavior.  It’s clear that Curry takes his responsibilities as a father just as seriously as he takes his game.
